Dear, Mr. President

Stevie walked through the halls of the West Wing after lunch. CJ had taken
her to lunch and they had had a great time. Stevie had found a great friend
in the older woman. She'd hinted around about Danny through the entire lunch
and Stevie could tell by CJ's short answers that the Press Secretary liked
Danny too.

Another card for her internal rolodex of information...

She paused as she approached Toby Ziegler's office. CJ had shown her the way
after lunch. Stevie was the slightest bit hesitant about going into the man's
office. He hadn't exactly been very friendly at the staff meeting that
morning and she had an idea that he really didn't want to deal with her.

But, since when had something like that bothered her. She'd spent an entire
lifetime knowing that the people around her didn't want to be bothered with
her...

She tapped on Toby's office door softly.

"Come in."

Stevie opened the door and looked in, "Mr. Ziegler?"

Toby looked up, irritated with the interruption, "What? Oh, it is my turn to
baby-sit you?"

Stevie's right eyebrow raised immediately, "You're not baby-sitting me."

Toby looked back down at the speech he was writing, "Well, it certainty seems
that way."

"Well, you're not."

Toby glanced up at the stubbornness in her voice. He shook his head and
looked back down at his computer, leaving Stevie standing in the middle of
his office. Stevie stood there for a moment... He was ignoring her... She
hated to be ignored, she had been ignored all her life. Well, she had never
made it easy for people to ignore her and she wasn't going to start now.

"Hachoo!" she sneezed loudly.

Toby didn't look up.

Her eyebrow quirked up, "HACHOO!!"

Toby sucked in a breath, but didn't look up.

Suddenly, Stevie seemed to be seized with a coughing fit. Toby threw down the
pen he was holding and glared at her. She looked at him innocently, "What did
I do?"

He pointed to a chair, "Sit down and be quiet."

Stevie suppressed a smile and did as she was told. She waited for a few
minutes and then began to kick the front of his desk, softly.

Toby continued to type away, doing his best to ignore the banging on his
desk. She'd won one round, he wasn't going to let this kid win another.

Stevie for her part, just watched Toby. She could see the muscles in his face
flexing. he was fighting the urge to pay the slightest bit of attention to
her. Well, she could play this game too.

She started to hum, very softly.

Toby put one hand on his forehead, trying to block out the noise Stevie was
making ... he wasn't doing to great a job, though...

Smelling victory, Stevie rose and leaned on his desk. Face cradled in her
hands, she just stared at Toby as she continued to hum.

For a few moments, the pair seemed locked in a battle, neither willing to
give up. Then, just as Stevie was beginning to think she'd met her match,
Toby slammed his hands down on his desk.

"All right! Fine you won!" He exclaimed. "What do you want, you midget of a
pain in the..."

"I want you to talk to me." Stevie said, smiling sweetly.

"If I talk to you will you stop being a pain in my butt?"

"Yes."

"Promise?" Toby glared.

"Promise..." Stevie said. "Now what are you writing?"

"A speech, Einstein."

"No kidding..." Stevie said, rolling her eyes. "What kind of speech."

"A speech for the President to read." Toby said, knowing full well he was
initiating a new war with the girl.

"Well, considering the fact that you work for the President, I kinda figured
that one out on my own." Stevie said. "What I want to know is the subject
matter of the speech."

"Oh, well, why didn't you say so?"

"I did say so!" Stevie exclaimed. Then she saw the smirk on Toby's face ...
he was paying her back for her little routine moments before. "Okay, okay ...
we're even. Truce?"

Toby thought for a moment, "Truce. Now, what do you want to know?"
