“I just meant that it’s about time.” Josh exclaimed as he looked around the
room at the happy people who were laughing and talking amongst themselves in
the Rose garden. He was standing at the doorframe with Donna, Sam and Mallory,
caught between the food in the dining room and the beauty of the outdoors. Toby
was never an outdoor person, but the rose garden opportunity could never be
passed up.

“We all know it’s about time, Josh.” Mallory retorted. “You seem to have a
tendency to state the obvious.” She teased. Josh mimicked her and then looked
back out at the garden.

“Just think, Josh.” Donna whispered into his ear as she leaned close to
him. He smiled as she spoke, slipping his arm around her waist. “Pretty soon this
is going to be us.”

“Not soon enough.” Josh whispered back before kissing her gently. She
smiled and kissed him back. Sam and Mallory smiled at them and then at each
other. Sam kissed her jaw gently and held her close.

“This is a good day.” He murmured to her.

“Yes, it is.” She whispered back as she nuzzled his neck.

“You feel better?” He asked softly. She smiled and nodded.

“I told you, Sam, I feel fine.” She assured him. Still, he could sense the
uncertainty in her voice. She had been acting strange for nearly a week now, and
he couldn’t figure out why. Instead of pressuring her for answers, Sam just held
her closer and looked out at the many guests. It was a relatively small wedding
party, for who could come on such short notice, but it was a happy, vibrant
collection of people who seemed to share a love for each other. Sam could see the
President and the first lady talking playfully, David and Ginger talking as they
picked at the appetizers on the table, Leo talking to a woman Sam didn’t
recognize, CJ and Danny laughing together. . .

Wait, who was Leo talking to? Sam looked at the apparent closeness of the
two and then back at Mallory, who was talking to Josh and Donna again and
laughing. Maybe that was it. Mallory was nervous about her father dating again.
Sam looked back at Leo and the strange woman and saw a peculiar sort of
closeness between them. Mallory had not mentioned that Leo was seeing
anybody, but then again, neither had Leo. At least he looked happy. Sam sighed
and returned his attention to his friends.

Suddenly music began to stream through the air. People looked up and
began to move inside. There was a small live band playing soft music as the
dance floor began to glisten in the light of the chandeliers. Toby and KD looked up
from the conversation with the First couple and then smiled at each other. Toby
took her hand and led her on to the floor. As people began to arrive inside, Toby
took KD into his arms and they began to dance.

You with the sad eyes
Don’t be discouraged to realize
It’s hard to take courage,
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it
And the darkness inside you
Makes you feel so small
But I see your true colors shining through.
I see your true colors and that’s why I love you,
So don’t be afraid to let them show,
Your true colors, true colors are beautiful, ooh like a rainbow

“I love you, Toby Ziegler.” KD whispered into his ear as they moved across
the floor to the song that played more than a year ago when they danced his living
room floor. He smiled at her and kissed her gently.

“I love you too, Kathryn Ziegler.” He said with a grin. She chuckled, hearing
her new name for the first time. “I’m never going to let you go, you know that?” He
added as he held her close.

“Tell me that’s a promise.” She whispered back as she rested her head on
his shoulder and inhaled the scent of his presence through her nostrils. He smiled
and kissed her forehead.

“It’s a promise, Katy.” He replied softly.

Show me a smile
Don’t be unhappy
Can’t remember when
I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
Just call me up
Because you know I’ll be there.
And I see your true colors shining through.
I see your true colors and that’s why I love you,
So don’t be afraid to let them show,
Your true colors, true colors are beautiful, ooh like a rainbow.

“How far have we come?” KD asked softly as she looked around the room
at the people who were watching them. She could see her father talking to the
woman she’d only recently met. She could see Joss holding Abbey tightly in his
arms as they watched the newlyweds dance. She saw Josh and Donna bicker
playfully and Sam and Mallory gaze into each other’s eyes as they talked softly.
David and Ginger were resting in each other’s arms and listening to the music. As
KD turned her head, she met Toby’s gaze.

“We’ve come the distance.” He answered her softly before pressing his lips
to hers. She kissed him back and held him tightly.

“I’m glad.” She whispered to him.

Such sad eyes
Take courage now,
Realize, when this world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
Just call me up
Because you know I’ll be there.
And I see your true colors shining through.
I see your true colors and that’s why I love you,
So don’t be afraid to let them show,
Your true colors, true colors, true colors are shining through
I see your true colors and that’s why I love you,
So don’t be afraid to let them show,
Your true colors, true colors,
True colors are beautiful, beautiful like a rainbow.

“You know you’re the most beautiful woman in this room?” Toby said
softly as he nuzzled her neck. KD smiled and closed her eyes as they moved
across the floor.

“I think your opinion is slightly biased.” She murmured. He nodded as he
kissed her chin.

“Doesn’t make it any less true.” He retorted softly. KD laughed softly and
looked him in the eye.

“I love you so much. I can’t believe the mistake I—“ She started when he
pressed his fingers to her lips and shook his head.

“It’s in the past now, Katy. You’re mine, and I am yours. Nothing’s going to
change that.” He whispered. “We’re going to fight in the future, but fights end, and
in the long run, I’m never letting you go.” He said softly as he gazed into her eyes.
KD smiled and tried not to cry.

“That sounds good to me.” She whispered as the music began to end. He
nodded and kissed her tenderly.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Show me your colors, show me a rainbow.
Show me your colors, show me a rainbow.
That’s why I love you

As they slowed to a stop, the guests clapped their hands together to honor
the end of the first dance. KD and Toby smiled and moved off the floor, and
accepted the well wishes of their friends and family. Toby looked up as a door
opened and he smiled.

“About time he got here.” He said softly. KD followed his gaze.

“Maybe he didn’t know how to get here from the temple.” She suggested.

“All he had to do was follow everyone else.” Toby retorted.

“He’s an astronaut, Toby. Maybe he doesn’t know how to put two and two
together.” KD replied with a smirk.

“Hey, guys. I’m so sorry I’m late.” David Ziegler exclaimed as he walked up
to them. “I got stuck on something called DuPoint circle. I swear, this city isn’t like
it used to be.”

“When’s the last time you were in DC anyway, Dave?” KD asked.

“Um . . . I’ll chose not to answer that at this time.” Toby’s brother replied
with a grin. “Toby, man, I’m sorry I’m late.”

“It’s okay. I’m glad you could come at all, I can imagine NASA gives you a
pretty tight schedule.” Toby said with a smile as he shook his brother’s hand.
Dave nodded and then kissed KD on the cheek.

“Welcome to the family.” He said cheerfully. KD blushed slightly.

“Thank you.” She said softly. “It’s my honor.” She added as Toby held her
close. Dave nodded again and looked around.

“The White House. Man, brother, you’ve got a good one here.” He said
softly. Toby rolled his eyes.

“I’ve been working here for three years. You’ve been here a dozen times.”
He pointed out. Dave paused and then nodded.

“Yeah, but for a wedding reception? I think it’s downright nice of the
President to let you use the area.” Dave explained.

“Well, I managed to use some blackmail.” KD said playfully. Dave and Toby
chuckled softly. KD smiled innocently and looked back at Toby. Then she looked
around the room and saw all their friends talking softly. She was home and it felt
damn good.
