NOTES: This takes place on the same day that "If You're Gone" ended. As you
can tell, this is going to be a little mini-series. It's far from over, and I
do really hope you enjoy it. :) Do let me know, whether you like or hate it.
Please be honest. Okay. Here we go.

SUMMARY: KD has come home but what happens now?

“Air force one, you’re cleared for landing.” A voice announced through the
line. As soon as CJ got the message, she got the strangest feeling of déjà vu. It
was only two days ago or so that they’d landed in Dallas and she’d gotten the
exact same message. She leaned across the seat and rested her head on Danny’s
shoulder, not really wanting to get to her feet just yet. Danny smiled and rested
his chin on her head.

“We’re landing.” He said softly.

“I know.” She whispered.

“You gonna stay here with me forever?” He asked hopefully as he kissed
her head. She smiled and looked at him.

“Sounds good to me.” She admitted before kissing him gently. He kissed
back and then heard a shuffle to his left.

“Awww, Kodiak moment.” KD cooed before getting pulled by Toby towards
the exit. CJ buried her face into Danny’s neck while he grinned like an idiot. That
was KD’s favorite thing to say and now it felt like she was really back. Danny
looked down at CJ and brushed the hair out of her eyes.

“Welcome home, CJ.” He whispered. “Let’s go.” He added as he took her
hand and pulled her to her feet.

“I don’t wanna.” She whispered as she snuggled into his arms. He held her
close and kissed her forehead.

“Okay. Let’s just live here.” He replied as he pulled her back down on the
couch and started kissing her neck. She laughed and pushed him off.

“Point taken.” She replied.

“No, no. We can just stay here.” He assured her before pressing his lips to
hers. She laughed and kissed back.

“CJ, as much as I love watching you kiss Danny, we have to get back to the
Wing.” Josh called as he passed them. CJ sighed and looked Danny in the eye. He
smiled at her.

“Let’s go.” He whispered again. She nodded and got up with him. As they
got out of the plane, they saw KD and Toby talking softly while her jeep was
unloaded from the cargo space.

“I can’t believe she made them do that.” CJ muttered. Danny chuckled.

“I’m not the least bit surprised.” He retorted as he walked with her towards
the limo. “I’ll see you later?” He asked. CJ nodded and kissed him gently. He was
a little surprised because she’d never kissed him in the view of the public before,
but he kissed back anyway.

“I’ll see you.” She promised before getting into the limo with Josh and
Donna. Danny grinned like an idiot and walked towards the parking lot for his car.
Behind him, KD leaned back against Toby.

“You know this isn’t going to be easy.” She whispered to him as he kissed
her neck and squeezed her close.

“I know. We’ll do this, Katy. We can.” He whispered back before kissing her
gently. She smiled at him after kissing back and then looked to her car. “I hope
they didn’t scratch it.” She muttered.

“I’m sure they didn’t.” Toby said softly. She looked at him.

“Can we do this?” She whispered.

“Not only can we, but we will.” He assured her before kissing her again.
She kissed back and then nodded.

“Okay. Let’s go then.” She whispered. He chuckled and opened the door
for her. She climbed into the car and readjusted the seat. He climbed into the
other side and watched as she started the car and drove after the departing limos
for the West Wing. As they drove, the window flew through her hair and Toby
realized that she was home.

David Beckwith muttered softly as he crossed the room to the Xerox
machine to copy a few papers he had to fax to KD later on that day. She was
expecting them sometime soon. He’d seen her on TV yesterday and he didn’t
know how he felt about it. He copied the papers absentmindedly, trying not to
think about anything really. He walked back to his desk and moved to sit in his
chair when he noticed it was occupied.

“Boss?” He asked weakly as KD got to her feet.

“You been goofing off while I was gone?” She asked softly. David shook
his head and then hugged her tightly.

“Don’t do that again.” He insisted as he hugged her. KD laughed and
hugged him back.

“It’s good to see you too.” She whispered and stroked the young man’s
hair. It felt good to see him again. They’d never said as such to each other, but the
relationship they shared was more of a mother-son interaction than a professional
one. It didn’t matter that David was only about ten years younger than her, making
it impossible for her to be his mother; they still respected each other as such.
Toby walked up behind them and tapped David on the shoulder.

“Mine.” He said simply. David laughed and stepped back.

“Good.” He declared. “Good.” Toby smiled and squeezed David’s shoulder
before looking KD in the eye. The hardest stuff wasn’t over yet.

“You gonna be able to handle this surprise?” KD asked as she looked at
David. He nodded and pointed to the papers on his desk.

“I think things will be easier now that you’re actually here.” He replied
honestly.

“Okay. I’ve got to go settle some stuff, so you just do whatever.” KD told
him before moving with Toby for the hallway.

“Yes, ma’am.” David replied playfully as they disappeared. He turned
around and caught Ginger’s gaze. She smiled at him and nodded. He nodded back
and hugged her tightly. Down the hall, KD said hello to everyone that saw her and
smiled. She laughed as they joked with her, but she had a destination and she had
to keep it. Slowly, she and Toby walked into Margaret’s office. Margaret gasped
and hugged KD hello.

“What are you doing here?” She asked fitfully. KD chuckled.

“Good to see you too. Is he in?” KD asked. Margaret nodded. KD smiled at
her and then at Toby before moving to the door and leaning in. Leo was on the
phone, staring out the window. She moved inside and sat on his couch, out of his
eyesight.

“Yeah, okay. Yeah, I had fun too.” He said softly. “I’ll see you then.” He said
and hung up. He looked around his desk and then noticed that someone was
sitting on his couch.

“Hey, dad.” KD said softly as she stood up again. Leo smiled as tears came
to his eyes and walked forward to hug her tightly. She hugged back and buried
her face in his shoulder. “You think you got some room for a stupid little girl on
this staff?” She asked softly. Leo laughed and looked into her eyes.

“No, but I think we have room for you.” He assured her and then hugged
her again. “Welcome home, Katy.” He whispered. She hugged him tightly and
nodded, glancing at Toby through the doorframe. Toby smiled at her and then
jerked his head towards her. She frowned and then looked to the doorway to the
Oval office. Jed Bartlet was standing in the doorway with his jaw dropped open
and his eyes wide. She smiled at him, not letting go of her surrogate father and
nodded. He nodded back. Leo stepped away and saw his best friend standing
there. KD faced the President and found him hugging her too.

“You’re back.” Jed whispered in her ear as he hugged her tightly.

“If you’ll take me.” She whispered back. He chuckled and lifted her off the
ground in a bear hug.

“Of course.” He exclaimed happily as he put her back on the ground. She
blushed a little and nodded.

“But I have to do some things first.” She said softly, looking back at Toby
who had now entered the room. Leo and Jed exchanged glances and then looked
at her. Would they be getting the truth now?

“What things?” Leo asked softly.

“I have to deal with the thing that made me leave in the first place.” KD
admitted as Toby slipped his arms around her waist.

“We’re going to deal with it.” He corrected. KD leaned back into him and
nodded. The two men opposite them nodded, wondering what the thing was but
they both decided not to press for answers.

“Is there going to be a problem?” Jed asked softly.

“I wouldn’t have left if there wasn’t.” KD retorted softly. She felt Toby
squeeze her tighter and rested her hands on his.

“Do you need our help?” Leo asked.

“No.” KD replied quickly. “I’m not sure what we’re going to do, but I think
we need to do it alone and not involve you guys.”

“Sooner or later, is this going to involve us?” Jed asked. KD hesitated.

“It might, but we’re working on it.” She replied honestly.

“I don’t feel so great about operating in the dark.” Leo admitted.

“Leo, trust us.” Toby spoke up. “I know what I’m doing and we’re doing
everything we can to protect this White House.” He assured them. Leo nodded
and so did the President.

“I’m just glad you’re back, kid.” Jed exclaimed. “You should go say hi to
Abbey. She missed you too.” KD smiled weakly and nodded.

“Later, I promise.” She said softly. “I just think I might be getting an
important phone call soon.” She added.

“From who?” Leo probed.

“Destiny.” KD replied playfully. “Excuse us, guys.” She added softly and
led Toby out of the room. Leo and Jed looked at each other and grins broke out
across their faces.

“She’s back.” They said in unison.
