Beta Readers

The following is a list of beta readers and their preferences, refusals and specialties. Seeing as how this list is several years old, there is no guarantee any of these writers will still beta your fic. Betas - want to be removed? Drop me a line at westwingfanfic<@>jen-m.com. I do not think I will be adding beta readers at this time. If you sent me an email about it previously and really want to be included, you may write to remind me and I will look for it.

• Use Barry Manilow's "Talk To Me."
• Use "Something To talk About" by Bonnie Raitt.
• Use "War of Nerves: All Saints."
• Use "Just My Imagination."
• Use "River: Joni Mitchell."
• Write a story where Josh and/or Donna gets a glimpse into their past lives. This story should be a historical/period piece. Also, it might get the juices flowing for those of you who are more sci-fi inclined.
• Fanfic cliche: Write Josh and Donna on a deserted island. How did they get there? No crashing Air Force One now. How would they handle that?
• Donna gets offered the opportunity of a lifetime. What is it? Will she accept? What will Josh think? How will he react?
• The President is whisked away to an undisclosed location for safety reasons (ala "the card" in Crackpots and These Women), where Josh and Leo are the only ones whisked away with him. What are the circumstances? Where are they hidden? For how long? What's going on back at the WHite House? And how will things be different when they emerge? Alternate future-fic.
• Put Josh and Donna in the middle of an uprising in another country. How are they treated?
• Write an alternate universe story where Donna is the boss and Josh is the assistant.
• 1) It can be anything you like, Romance, humour, angst as long as it J/D related. 2) A woman called Scarlett must be mentioned in the story somewhere. 3) The President gives a piece of useless trivia about the American Civil War. 4) A member of the senior staff has to say hi to an unknown, and unnimportant staffer lying on the floor with a broken hip. 5) There must be a joke about 'Gone with the Wind.' 6) The story must end with the words, 'Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.'
• 1. It can be any type of fic you want, humor, romance, fluff, angst, you name it. 2. There must be a joke about the movie Shrek in it. 3. (This is the good part) There must be some sort of "Dating Game" situation (if you've seen the movie, you know the scene where Lord Farquat has to pick between the 3 "bachelorettes")...anyway someone could be on the Dating Game, or Singled Out, or something like that, it could be really funny. 4. Someone must sing the words "If you like pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain..."
• 1) An 80's song....can be the lyrics can be just the title. 2) Bartlet must use some trivia about the Regan administration. 3) Use a line from any of the following 80's movies: Goonies, Breakfast Club, Footloose
• - Twin Peaks must be a plot device. - A couple gets stuck in the snow. - One of the women says that Kyle MacLachlan is sexy. - Somebody has trouble with the new year transition. - Josh meets with a midget in a red room. - Someone eats creamed corn. - Donna goes on a date with a biker named James. - A couple watches television. - CJ launches an investigation to find out who killed her gold fish. - Someone talks about fire. - Sam makes a really bad poem using the word fire. - Leo has a disturbing dream. - Margaret talks about an evil man named Bob. - Two couples stay at a hotel named either the white lodge, the black lodge, or the Great Northern inn. - The president says 'the owls are not what they seem.' - The lines 'That's damn fine coffee!' and 'This must be where pies go when they die' must be used.
• 1) Can be anything you like, humour, romance etc. and any storyline but has to be J/D related. 2) No season 3 spoilers please! 3)There is a, drunken, high-kicking chorus line parading through the bullpen singing 'We are the champions!' the reason is up to you. 4) CJ get's cynical and sarcastic. 5) Sam falls off a desk. 6) Toby and The President run through the White House playing a pretend game of 'Die Hard' and the President cheats. 7)Leo tries to make a 'Die Hard' joken and fails spectaculary. 8)Someone does an evil laugh (a real 'mwa ha ha ha') for no apparent reason. 9) Michael Caine shows up at the White House and tries to chat someone up with the line, 'Get your coat love, you've pulled.' 10) Has to end with the line, 'And that's what I like to call kicking your ass, baby!'
• Related to The Mummy and The Mummy Returns... could we somehow make Rick and Evie O'Connell related to Donna?
• Write the proposal. That's it one scene....can be longer if you want.
• A romance fic with Leo/Margaret, Sam/CJ, Josh/Donna and Toby/Ginger. How about The President, First Lady and Charlie set them up.
• Write a fic in which the number 1000 plays a fairly important part.
• Write a shipperfic based on the movie "Easter Parade."
• Turn the song "Never Saw Blue Like That" by Shawn Colvin, or any of the songs on the Dawsons Creek soundtrack, into a fanfiction or ficlet.
• What would happen if Donna thought that Josh joined The Skulls and thats how he got his job?
• Use those tiny coffee mugs an name plates that they sell in gift shops.
• Mention or quote Mark Twain. Or visit his hometown.
• Use Niagara Falls.
• Write a Back-to-School fic. Just use the theme somewhere in the story.
• Write a fic where the gang goes to another country and someone insults a dignitary.
• Write a story where we discover that Helen Hunt is Donna's relative and she comes to the west wing to help Josh and Donna get together.
• Write about Josh "hosting" a teen-age girl - for example, Donna's sister, husband, and teen-age daughter are coming to visit donna, but she doesn't have enough room at her apartment, so she convinces Josh to let them stay at his apartment.
• Have it be Josh and Donna's wedding anniversary....however many years... and have the characters reflect back on J/D's relationship, the White house years etc.
• Paint us a picture of the environment our favorite couple lives in. (I.E., what, besides Donna's underwear, is in her desk drawer?)
• Use the following line: "I could never sleep with you, you're too important. I could never sleep with you becuase ever time I sleep with a woman I screw something up."
• Have someone use Shakespeare.
• A The American President cross over.
• Work the following quote into a story somehow: "It is useless to hold a person to anything he says while he's in love, drunk, or running for office." - Shirley MacLaine
• Toby takes C.J. to a Yankees game. Maybe they see them play in Baltimore, maybe they go on a fun road trip to New York, either way: C.J., Toby, and baseball.
• From In Excelsis Deo - change the scene in CJ's office when she's reading Danny her list of reasons why they shouldn't go out. Danny has to actually have a list of his own, they have to compare lists and as CJ said "see where they are" at the end of it.
• A fic where CJ gets pregnant, CJ and Danny don't have to be together at the start of the fic but ya know a happy smiley ending wouldn't be knocked.
• Write about Josh's first official trip out with the President (since the shooting or very first).
• April's Fool's - Donna playing jokes on Josh or Josh playing on Donna.
• Post 17-People: In light of CJ being declared missing in action, I wonder how she would react to Josh giving Donna flowers? Or how would she react to Donna's traffic light comment?
• Have Josh and Dr. Free Ride meet.
• Josh and Donna's first meeting where she hires herself as Josh's assistant, from Josh's POV.
• The theme should be 'Donna's Mom Versus Josh.' Somewhere in the fic, it must include the following line: "So you're the reason my daughter never comes home."
• Donna gets an invitation to her high school's 10th reunion and she brings Josh as her date.
• The Senior Staff is always portrayed as one big happy family in fics, so I would like to see one where they get into a major brawl. Possible Scenarios- Josh/Donna versus the rest of the staff; Assistants versus staff; Josh and Donna get into a major fight and and the staff all takes sides, etc.
• Have Josh/Donna go on a road trip and have Sam inadvertenly give them wrong directions.
• Use "If you can do anything else" By George Strait in a song fic.
• Have Josh/Donna go to a murder/mystery dinner party.
• Send Josh/Donna and/or gang on cruise. Can be to Hawaii or somewhere else. This could be good for either angst or fluff also great for a wedding cruise.
• Write a fic using Eve 6's song "Here's to the Night."
• J/D fic - 'Seasons of Love' from Rent, one line was (paraphrasing) "Can the year be measured in cups of coffee?"
• Have Donna and Ainsley have a chat about the men or not the men in their lives.
• Have Sam and Josh have a chat about the women or not the women in their lives.
• Write a CJ/Danny break up fic.
• Write a Hannukah fic. Have Josh and Donna go to temple together, light the menorah together, and/or have a staff dreidal game.
• Have Josh and Donna go ice skating.
• Have Josh and Donna get snowed in somewhere together.
• A winter storm causes the power to go out in the White House, but the staff cannot go home due to treacherous road condition. To kill time unable to work or leave Josh and Donna (and maybe other staff members as well) start of game of Truth or Dare...
• Write a fic about how Sam and Josh first met.
• Write a silly Xmas fic that ends up with Sam singing 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer'.
• Haven't found all that much Sam/Ainsley so I'm presenting a challenge. Here it is:
• Must have:
  -Sam/Ainsley
  -beginning of the relationship (how it started)
  -Senior staff reactions to their dating
  -Optional Josh/Donna
  -Ainsley and Sam go to see her parents for a weekend or longer on any
  major holiday (Main plot event)
  -either and/or both POVs
  -include something about Ainsley's food fixation
  -Can include Mallory if you like
  -any rating acceptable
• Silly Galileo challenge: write what happens during and after the next press briefing, when someone (Danny?) asks C.J. about the "I'm great in bed" statement.
• Have Ainsley's female democratic cousin(or other relative)come work for the white house. Have Sam and the cousin(or whatever) start up a relationship and Ainsley becomes jealous.
• What if Donna had been at the town hall meeting and she'd been shot instead of Josh.
• I was wondering if anyone out there can come up with a good story to show the time that Josh finally wakes up, then goes home, where Donna makes all the rules and he, and everyone else apparently, have to follow them. I think some of that would have made great TV, but hopefully now it will make a good story!
• Write a fanfic in which CJ "saves the day" or CJ has a "day of jubilee."
• If you were Aaron Sorkin, how would you write a Josh/Donna romance while staying true to the character of the show? Now, we in the world of fanfic love one thing, but I certainly can't see Sorkin using any of my ideas. So, write how it could play without turning Sorkin into Spelling.
• Write a story with the following words...
  a) birdcage
  b) gumdrop
  c) pumpkin
  d) Minnie Mouse
  & the following quote...
  "What are you kids doing in here?"
• Write a story with the following words...
  a) Las Vegas
  b) purple hair
  c) shower
  d) dancing in the rain
  & the following quote...
  "There's something I've been meaning to tell you..."
• Write what you think could/should/will happen after the Season Finale.
• Jeff Breckenridge (sp? The guy from 6 Meetings Before Lunch who has been nominated to be the next assistant attorney general of civil rights) is confirmed by the Senate. Write Josh's "Day of Jubilee" and how Donna shares it.
• Have Josh take Donna to Hawaii.
• Write the marriage proposal for Josh and Donna.
• Take a stab at writing a fic dealing with Josh's past with the Hoynes's campaign.
• On another fic list, somebody posted a challenge about what was said on a card that the lead male character sent to the lead female character with a bouquet of flowers. I figured that could work on this list since we're all dying to know what Josh wrote in the book he gave Donna for Christmas. Doesn't have to be a story just write what you think Josh wrote as the inscription.
• Write Donna's reaction to the shooting
• Write what happened in Josh's office after Zoe and Charlie left after Josh sat down on his imaginary chair.
• Have Donna and Josh bail each other out of jail or have them both end up in jail.
• Have Donna and Josh wake up married.
• Write Donna and Josh's first date.
• Have Josh and Donna get lost because Sam accidently gave them wrong directions.
• The challenge is that the story cannot be more than 55 WORDS! (No, that is not a typo.) And they have to have the 3 C's: character, conflict, conclusion. (Or object, obstacle, outcome.)
• Jed and Abby's when they first met.
• Jed and Abby's wedding.
• The whole shebang Jed and Abby's meeting, courtship, and wedding.
